Oral Health and Endocrine Disorders
Can your oral health be affected by an endocrine disorder?
What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is made up of several organs called glands. They create and secrete hormones that affect the processes of your body, including:
- Growth/development
- Sexual function/reproduction
- Sleep
- Weight control
- Mood
- Heart rate/blood pressure
To help keep your endocrine system healthy:
- Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water
- Exercise regularly
- Get regular medical checkups
- Talk with your doctor before taking supplements
What are endocrine disorders and how do they affect oral health?
Endocrine disorders occur when the glands produce too much or not enough of a hormone. They can be caused by a genetic disorder, infection, disease or an injury to a gland.
In the United States, the most common endocrine disorder is diabetes. Others include:
- Adrenal insufficiency
- Cushing's disease
- Growth hormone problems, such as gigantism (acromegaly)
- Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
- Hypopituitarism
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 and 2
- Polycystic ovary syndrome
Oral health complications that result from an endocrine disorder may include:
- Gum recession
- Dry mouth
- Sensitive teeth
- Gum disease
- Bad breath
- Tooth decay
Children with some of these disorders may show signs of underdevelopment or slowed growth. They may have a delay in tooth eruption or an underdeveloped jawbone.
Oral changes and symptoms may help your dentist to identify endocrine disorders during regular exams.
